Hello Professor Teague & Class,
~What is a distribution channel?
a path that a product or service could take on its way to market.
~What decisions go into selecting a distribution channel?
The Nature of the Product; The Nature of the market; The Nature of Middlemen; The nature and size of the manufacturing unit; Government Regulations and Policies; and Competition.
~What are the major types of channels? Provide an example.
A direct channel allows the consumer to make purchases from the manufacturer, while an indirect channel allows the consumer to buy the goods from a wholesaler or retailer.
Modern day consumers utilize both forms of channels to make life easier for them. A customer can have something drop shipped directly from the manufacturer. Or in most cases they use a third party or indirect channel. It is all about how fast the product can be in the customers hand, the quality of the product, and how efficient it was. I love how you can research one item, but get hits from so many other resources. That has made life so much easier for everyone that has access.
Thanks,

A distribution channel can easily be defined as a path that products and services can take while on it’s way to the market. Which channel a company decides to most likely on the product as well as the target audience. The three main types of distribution channels are producer, wholesale and retail. When it comes to producer distribution a company sells products directly to the customer with little to know middle man. This can include someone who makes custom shirts online and sales them directly to the customer without using the assistance of a third party. When it comes to wholesale, a producer sells directly to a retailer who sells the product to consumers. A great example of this would be a companies that produce cereal. The company produces cereal and then distributes it to different stores to sell to consumers. Last, we have retail which is a popular way for companies to sell their products. To understand this concept, we can think of a traditional store like Target. Although you can shop online, it is very easy to find an actual store you can shop at. This is a huge benefit in my opinion as you can purchase items in store and not have to wait for shipping.
