Grossmont College Modern Music Discussion
Question Description
I’m working on a other discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
Q.1) Listen to Eric Whitacre’s ‘Sleep.’ Does it sound like modern music to you? Perhaps it sounds old or ageless? All of these labels that we ascribe to music have different associations. For example, I might say that the music of Bruno Mars sounds old because the timbre of his voice and instruments used align with that era. I may even discuss the form of the music, or the harmonies that are being played. Discuss the Whitacre using these tools. Why does it sound old or new? What gives the music this quality? Be sure to focus on elements of the music itself.

Q.2) The ‘Huapango’ is the first piece of orchestral music by a Mexican composer to be included in one of our modules. Imagine, though, that its title was nondescriptive…something like ‘fantasia.’ What elements of this music make it sound ‘Mexican’ or, if there aren’t any, write about that. How does this composer write in a style that is evocative of a certain place or culture?
