EAU Art Space Art Essay
Description
OBJECTIVE: Select one work of space art from a particular genre, period, or culture, and adapt it to your own new work using the conventions of another genre, period, or culture (for example, film to painting, or mid-century to Pre-Raphaelite).
Your supporting essay should detail the characteristics of the original work and its aesthetic-historical-cultural context in relation to the themes and issues of space art more generally.
You should then compare the characteristics of your work to the original, explaining why you made the decisions you did based on the aesthetic-historical-cultural characteristics of the genre, period, or culture you chose.
Finally, explain how your original work reflects the themes issues and history of space art you discussed and how it fits into our growing understanding of space art as a genre.
WRITING TASKS: As you prepare your essay, think about the following:
First, include a thesis that makes an arguable claim about what space art is and why it is important in your introduction.
After that, provide a brief history and description of space art and it primary purposes and characteristics. This history should include discussion of major figures and phases in space art that support the claim you made in your thesis.
Then, introduce your original work. What is it called? What form does it take? What genre does it belong to? Who created it? When? Why?
Consider the original work through the lens of the history and characteristics you have provided. How does it reflect what you have told us about space art? Where and how does it fit into space arts history?
- Describe the original work in detail. What does it look like? How was it made? Does it conform to the expected conventions of the form and genre or does it break boundaries? How or why?
- Next, go further in analyzing the original work. Look at it both artistically and historically. Break down its elements and explain how they work together and what messages they convey.
- Finally, describe your remake/adaptation of the original work. What form and genre did you choose? When was that genre most popular? What are the conventions of the form and genre you chose?
- Explain why you made the artistic choices you did given the form and genre you selected. How do they conform (or not conform) to the form and genre you chose?
- What did you learn about both the original artwork and your selected form or genre through trying to remake the work?
