Motivation Theories and Policies

Considering different types of employees in your organization, how will you motivate them. What job or personal characteristics do they possess that lead you to believe that this is the correct method of motivation? What theories are behind this theory of motivation?

What mechanisms of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation are at work in your organization? To whom do these apply? What characteristics or situational variables lead you to use intrinsic and extrinsic motivation at different times?

To what theories of motivation do you subscribe? Choose several that you believe are effective and give concrete examples of how you put these to work in your organization.

In answering these questions, you should be specific about financial compensation in its different forms (salary, piece rate, bonuses, merit pay), benefits, recognition, intrinsic motivation and any other techniques you feel appropriate to describe. You do not need to address each person’s pay and benefits but you should talk about broad categories of individuals.

Job Design

In what ways have you designed jobs to make them more motivational. While this may not be applicable for every organization and will certainly not be applicable for every job, discuss some of the considerations that you have utilized in developing job descriptions. In particular, where applicable you should discuss your organizations use of job rotation, job enlargement, job enrichment, alternative work arrangements and employee involvement. You are particularly encouraged to use the job characteristics model in your discussion.

Public Service Motivation

In what ways do you find public service motivation or other prosocial attitudes relevant to this organizations. If they are not relevant say so and explain why. If they are relevant, explain how they will be a) fostered and b) utilized for motivation.
