Here are some reference formatting guides. You will not be graded on the exact format, but it’s good to practice for later classes:

• APA Formatting (Links to an external site.) (Most often used in the Social Sciences)
• MLA Formatting (Links to an external site.)
• ASA Formatting (Links to an external site.) (I prefer this one, but it is barely used)

Part of your goal in a literature review is to paraphrase (Links to an external site.) the research of other scholars. For this assignment, you should consider potentially relevant research for your project (it is okay if you do not end up using these sources later). Please also check the following page on the main course site, which will outline some important information for this assignment and the final project: “An Important Note on Paraphrasing”

It is also helpful to refer to, “Notes on Literature Review and Research” on the main site.

Here is a brief demonstration from a meeting with a previous class that may be helpful. This just illustrates what to do in general in terms of form. But you also need to remember to include references in a bibliography. You can use any reference format that you would like, but you need to include the journal that the article was published in. 

Requirements

Please take three (3) to five (5) peer-reviewed academic sources (Links to an external site.) that should be at least somewhat related to your final project (remember, it is okay if this changes and if they are not exactly related). Related could mean that you find research on internet use, online forum participation, online culture, hobbies, baking, movies, video games – your choices are expansive.

You will need to use UCI Library databasesLinks to an external site. to get access to peer-reviewed articles (this includes Google Scholar – most peer-reviewed articles are not open access and you must be logged in to read them). This also means that you will need to use the UCI VPNLinks to an external site. to log in and gain access. 

Using paragraph format, practice your paraphrasing and putting the articles “in conversation” with each other as demonstrated in this week’s video on your assignment (found on the main course page) and the page regarding the note on paraphrasing.  You should paraphrase while also writing about something. How do the articles link? What do they have to say in relation to each other? What is your interpretation of the story these articles tell together?

You should only need one to two sentences per article, focusing on their major points and how they interact (is there agreement? Disagreement?). That will make your assignment approximately 1/2 to 1 page in length.
