Respect and civility in the work place is a vital component to a great healthcare organization. Unit culture and organization wide culture can contribute to the individual workers perceptions about their workplace. A healthy workplace culture is important for many reasons. One study found that there was a connection between workplace incivility and patient safety competence(Alquwez, 2020). Additionally, low staff morale can cause people to leave the workplace altogether(Ghandour et al., 2019).
My workplace scored a 75, based upon my own perceptions. According to Clark, my workplace should be considered mildly healthy(Clark, 2015). I found the assessment tool to be very thought provoking. I made me consider the many different ways a workplace can and should be supportive. Upon reflection, I found that some aspects of my hospital culture were more supportive than I thought. My hospital and unit culture are in fact very civil. When I began, I was assigned a mentor from the first day. The unit has a team of supervisors, so that your supervisor gets to know you more closely and can help with your professional development. Additionally, the hospital encourages professional development through certification. The hospital pays for the test, and the unit recognizes when you pass the test with a plaque on the wall. The hospital also gives a special gift to certified nurses every year. I had a bad experience with incivility when I was a brand new nurse. One of the nurses on night shift was known to be especially mean to new nurses, but nothing was really done about it. I was paired with her in a pod one of my first nights on my own, when I got my first ICU admission since being on my own. Not only did she not help me, she also derided me for not being able to do the whole admission myself. I ended up very upset, and went to the unit managers office that morning and cried, telling her that I felt unsupported and felt very dumb. The manager did take this. Seriously, especially after previous reports of her incivility. She received counseling, and did not bully me again. These experiences can be very upsetting, but by addressing them we can begin to change the culture of nursing to be one of respect and caring.
