Race Theory in Music
W.E.B. DuBois, Audre Lorde, Patricia Hill Collins, bell hooks, and a host of other critical race theorists suggest that music, poetry, and other forms of art may be more compelling media for conveying understanding of race and racism than standard academic writing is. Our studies of racism, intersectionality, and Black Feminist Thought offer a wide array of concepts and ideas that have emerged in the arts, especially in popular music.
Your mission for this assignment is to find a piece of music (a video file with lyrics, or two files–one for the music and one with the printed lyrics) that illuminates a key aspect of the inner workings of racism. Then reveal in a 1-2 page essay how that piece of music challenges assumptions about race or the effects of racism and how it dovetails in certain ways with ideas expressed by any of the theorists we have learned about in this module. In your essay, you must define and incorporate at least two concepts that you learned from our relevant readings/films/lectures into your analysis. (4 points)
Please include a link to a video (or audio recording) of the piece you chose and, if that video/audio does not include the printed lyrics, a link to the lyrics (1 point).
