Role Competence Discussion
Description
hi, this is S
This week’s theme is about growing up, is about learning how to belong to a society.
Each segment of Chapter 7 is fascinating in its own way. I’d like you to decide on your own focus around the knowledge of role competence.
Remember on DQ #4, we discussed that “we cannot not communicate”? Similar to this saying, please choose two sets of the theories under Ch., and discuss why “there is no such thing as not performing.”
(Two sets because under Ch. 7, most theories are clustered together – except for Looking-glass self – They are considered one set. Of course, you could choose Looking-glass self to be one of the sets)
Your answer needs to be no less than 250 words.
Back to the reading How to Have a Difficult Conversation on page 4, I see the key distinction between an argument and a dialogue as the pronoun “we.” In an argument, the energy is spent on how “I” can come up with a reasoning that can win over “you” (your reasoning). The exchange often comes out as a push-and-pull battle. The win is to push “my” idea forward; the loss is to pull backward until “I” can come up with a better argument.
Communication perspective is to invite upward thinking, is to remind us to be profoundly curious about the other. With this, and only with this, “we” can create a social world together, that is desirable for the “both of us.” Instead of focusing on “what have I said”, and “what has he/she understood,” We ask, “what are we making together.”
Notice that I wrote the above two paragraphs to describe dialogue using the language of communication perspective. I am confident that you can do the same, if not better, to understand what dialogue means to you. In no less than 100 words, describe your understanding of dialogue. You can also take my idea further, to elaborate further on your idea of communication perspective.
Ill send you the material later 🙂
