Think of an area of interest – perhaps your career interest, or a subject you have always been interested in. Posting Assignment #1 Give examples of data in your major/career area of interest for each of the levels of measurement (Nominal, Ordinal, Interval, and Ratio). I would like you to post EXAMPLES of each of the categories. WATCH the 1.2 videos in Modules->Chapter 2-> Scroll down to Resources & Click on Links (It will help you understand the example below) Example : If I am an Art major and I am going to be an Artist, then Nominal: (Mediums for Art) Ordinal (Top 3 Art Schools in the country) Interval: (Years the Art Schools were built) Ratio: (Number of Students enrolled at each school) NOTE: Critiques should have substance. A critique that just says “Good Job!” does not say what about it is good. A posting that says “Wow I didn’t know that about Disney World – I like MIckey Mouse too!” doesn’t say anything constructive or academic about the posting. You are expected to make meaningful constructive academic comments regarding how the data meets or does not meet the requirements of the data levels.
The following is a fictitious scenario: Florida cancer research institute received a $10,000,000 grant to look into alternative methods of improving the response rate for patients undergoing chemotherapy. A small experiment was started at a local chemotherapy clinic. The clinic was divided into 2 separate rooms. Patients were assigned a room at random and evenly divided between the 2 rooms during the same time. 30 minutes after chemotherapy began a clown was sent into one of the rooms to entertain the patients. The clown stayed for 2 1/2 hours then left and came back the following Saturday to entertain the same patients again. Every week blood tests were performed to check response rate with ‘level of cancer-indicators’ in the blood.
POSTING ASSIGNMENTAnswer the following questsions: #2 Both groups of patients received chemotherapy. Was there a “control” group? If so what was it? #3 How could you use “randomized block design” to improve this experiment? #4 Participant, Joe, switches rooms one Saturday so he can be with his wife who is in the other room. You didn’t catch him until the next week when he tried to do it again. What issues exist here? Is this a problem? If so, what should you do about it? |
