ASALLC Occupational Safety and Health Administration Discussion
Description
Hazard Communication (Hazcom) training is required in all workplaces where hazardous chemicals are used (not just construction).
Please provide a general discussion concerning the Hazard Communication Standard Final Rule known as the Globally Harmonized System.
Why was this an important change to the Hazard Communication standard?

What has been your experience with Hazcom training? Did it meet the standard? Was it effective? If you have never participated in Hazcom training, discuss who you think should provide this training on a construction site.
Please include the name of the person or question to which you are replying in the subject line. For example, “Tom’s response to Susan’s comment.”

The purpose of the standard is to ensure that any hazards associated with chemicals are classified. In 2003 an initiative was adopted by the United Nations in an attempt to provide effective communications when it came to hazards. The GHS specifies what information should be included on hazardous chemical labels and safety data sheets, as well as criteria for classifying health, physical, and environmental dangers. Open any MSDS, and all of this information is written in the clear easy to understand information.
It is important that we give all employees the information needed to ensure their safety. When working with hazardous products, manufacturers, employers, and employees must take precautions to avoid illness or injury. OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard [29 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 1910.1200] mandates this. To comply with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals, OSHA has made major revisions to this regulation (GHS). To this day, they are still working on ways to amend and make the GHS better.
Every workplace that uses potentially harmful chemicals must have Hazard Communication (Hazcom) training. Even the fire service has this training. We get extensive training with HAZMAT. I work part-time every holiday for UPS, and even as a part-time employee, I had to complete HAZCOM training. I believe the training is beneficial. I do believe that additional training should be done to increase awareness.
