San Diego State University Marge Piercys Poem Disscussion and Response
Description
Please view this video, which works with Marge Piercy’s poem. You will notice that there is an intersection between two art forms: poetry and another.
After viewing, please respond: Is this intersection effective? Interesting? “Meh”? Unappealing? You can respond/characterize it any way you’d like as long as you are honest and can support your statement, either way.
Also, if you were to interpret this poem besides simply reading it aloud, how would you do it? What other medium would you pair it with? Why?
As always, please also respond to another classmate, by name.

POST
stella The
intersection referenced in the video is between the poem and dance. I
found this intersection very effective, as the dancer’s movements well
matched the word choice in the poem. Whenever the words “wide open” were
uttered, the dancer extended her arms out wide, furthering the idea of
openness. When the line “stretching the muscles” is stated in the poem,
the dancer extends into a horizontal split, thus stretching her muscles
and reinforcing the line. The smooth franticness of the style of dance
as well perfectly matches the formatting of the poem, as the poem does
not hold a consistent format, rather changing where it is necessary to
establish certain words and sections as more poignant. An example of
this is the break between let and go between the third and forth stanza,
furthering the theme of the poem of loving without possession, in
essence letting go. The dancer performs flourishes in steps when this
line is spoken, emphasizing the importance of the line.If I were to interpret this poem besides reading it aloud, I would
want to pair it with film in a similar fashion to a music video.
Portraying the meaning of the lines and the mood of the poem through
film would be effective at the storytelling aspect of the poem and would
further the strong imagery provided.
