An effective community health assessment is based on an understanding that a combination of formal and informal normative factors shapes the health care practices and outcomes in modern society. Research has established that a health assessment based on understanding how organizational factors integrate with micro-level factors (e.g., interprofessional behaviors) can more accurately frame the health care needs of a community (Smith et al., 2019). Thus, establishing novel nursing practices to address community health care needs requires a complete community assessment. Failing to include all three levels of analysis means practice recommendations can prove ineffective because a key determinant was overlooked (Smith et al., 2019). For example, a recommendation to introduce a new health service at a community health center staffed by nurses providing their services pro bono can prove ineffective if consideration of nursing workload expectations of health care managers is not included (meso-level factor). Thus, an effective community health assessment report will consider all three levels of assessment.
