Cuyamaca College Ethnic Studies The Sixth World Discussion
Description
Review the Whyte essay and watch The Sixth World on canvas. As you watch it, think about the following questions:
- 1. What aspects of the film are familiar as reworking of genre elements from science fiction and fantasy that you recognize?
- 2. List any elements that are surprising, different, or that you would like to know more about when thinking of this film as coming from an Indigenous/Diné perspective?
- After watching it, try to come up with one example of each of the above (1 and 2). If you can take a screen shot while watching it that shows something you discuss, that would be cool. If you need to just write something out, that is ok, too. In one chunky paragraph, explain your answers and also quote from and analyze one sentence from the Whyte essay when doing so. The sentence need not be about this film specifically; it can be a more general claim about indigenous sf that you find relevant to understanding the film.
- Then write a second chunky paragraph answering the following question: What is the most significant relationship you have or have had to the more-than-human world, as you understand this after reading Whyte’s article?
